Machu Picchu is open all year, but the weather and crowds change a lot between months. Here is how to pick your dates.
Dry season: May to September
Clear skies, cold nights and the best views. It is also the busiest time and Inca Trail permits sell out months ahead. June to August can be very cold at night in the high passes.
Shoulder months: April and October
Often the best balance: greener landscapes, fewer people and generally good weather. Our favorite time for most travelers.
Rainy season: November to March
More rain and cloud, especially from January to March. Trails are muddy but quieter, and the mountains are green. Bring a good rain jacket and waterproof cover for your pack.
February: Inca Trail closed
The Classic Inca Trail closes every February for maintenance. Machu Picchu itself stays open, and alternative treks such as the Salkantay Trek 4 days or the Lares Trek 4 days remain available with caution in the wet months.
Quick picks
- Best weather: June to August.
- Best balance: April, May, September and October.
- Fewest people: November to early December and March.
