Machu Picchu Tickets: Circuits, Entry Times and How to Buy Them

By Condor Trek · Updated October 2026

Machu Picchu can no longer be visited on a whim. Entry is by timed ticket, along a fixed circuit, and with a licensed guide. This guide explains what that means for your trip.

How the circuits work

The citadel is visited along set routes. You cannot go back to a previous section once you have passed it. The classic panoramic photo is on the higher circuits, so choose your circuit with that in mind and confirm it with your guide before buying.

Entry time slots

Each ticket carries an entry window, for example 6:00 to 7:00 am, and a limited stay of about four hours. The first slots mean softer light and fewer people. Allow extra time: the bus line in Aguas Calientes can take an hour or more in high season.

Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain

These two climbs have their own, much smaller quotas and are bought together with the main entry. Huayna Picchu is steep and narrow; Machu Picchu Mountain is longer and less crowded. Neither is a good idea if you are afraid of heights.

How and when to buy

  • In high season, buy 1 to 2 months ahead, earlier for Huayna Picchu.
  • Tickets are bought with your passport details, and the name must match exactly.
  • Carry your original passport on the day: it is checked at the gate.

What is included in our tours

Machu Picchu entry is included in our Inca Trail and Machu Picchu tours, so you do not have to coordinate tickets, trains and guides by yourself. See the Short Inca Trail 2 days or the Classic Inca Trail 4 days, or send a booking request and we will plan the logistics.

Common mistakes

  • Booking the train before securing the entry ticket.
  • Misspelling the name or passport number.
  • Expecting to buy tickets in Aguas Calientes on the day.
  • Forgetting that there are no restrooms or food inside the citadel.
