Both routes finish at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate and both need a permit. The difference is time, effort and how much of the Inca path you walk.
Classic Inca Trail: 4 days, 3 nights
About 42 km, with campsites, the highest pass at 4,215 m (Warmiwanusca) and three Inca sites on the way. It is the complete experience, and it is best if you have the time and want the full adventure. See Classic Inca Trail 4 days.
Short Inca Trail: 2 days, 1 night
About 12 km, starting at Km 104, passing Winay Wayna and arriving at the Sun Gate at sunrise, with a night in a hotel in Aguas Calientes. It is a good choice if you are short on time, do not want to camp or prefer a gentler effort. See Short Inca Trail 2 days.
Which one should you pick?
- Pick the short trail if you have 3 or 4 days in Cusco, want a hotel bed and are traveling with older or younger hikers.
- Pick the classic trail if you want camping, the high passes and the full archaeological route.
Permits
Both use limited permits. Book early and check Inca Trail availability before you buy flights. If permits are sold out, consider the Salkantay Trek 4 days or the Lares Trek 4 days.
